In an interview, Guillaume Broche, game director of the RPG hit “Clair Obscure: Expedition 33,” spoke about the future of the role-playing game genre. He found clear words for critics who consider turn-based genre representatives to be old school or even a relic of the past.

With „Clair Obscure: Expedition 33“ The French studio Sandfall Interactive achieved this last year a real surprise success. The emotional adventure developed into one of the best-rated role-playing games of recent times and noticeably revived the community’s interest in turn-based genre representatives.

Game director Guillaume Broche took credit for the success of “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”. in an interview an opportunity to address the criticism of turn-based role-playing games. He contradicted the view of players who simply see the system as a relic of the past in times of action-packed real-time battles.

“I don’t understand this whole ‘turn-based is old fashioned’ thing,” Broche said. “I never believed that. In my eyes, such statements have always been complete nonsense. A lot of people say that. But it’s just a game system. I also like board games.”

Why turn-based role-playing games retain their appeal

According to the game director, the appeal of the genre is not just the turn-based battles themselves. According to Broche, aspects such as further developing one’s own group or preparing for upcoming boss fights also contribute significantly to the unique experience of turn-based role-playing games.

“It’s just like this: When you come up with a plan, you go into battle and everything goes pretty much exactly the way you want it to, and you see that all the puzzle pieces that you’ve prepared in the 50 hours of play beforehand fit together perfectly and everything works great, and you defeat the boss right in front of you – then it’s incredibly satisfying because you feel smart,” Broche said.

However, other genres such as action titles do not give him this feeling. Not even in moments when he masters a tricky boss fight, as the game director added.

“It’s a bit like math. You put things together, you solve the equation, you get to the end – $x = 2$ – that’s the right answer, you defeat the boss and you’re happy. And I love that,” said the game director, summing up his enthusiasm for turn-based role-playing games.

Sandfall Interactive has been working on a new project for some time. Apart from the fact that the studio one more time want to go their own way and at the same time accepts controversial reactionsbut the developers have not yet given any further details.
