The upcoming new version of the first “Tomb Raider” is more closely related to the younger series. Crystal Dynamics has placed “Legacy of Atlantis” into the existing canon, thereby clarifying a question about the timeline.
„Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis“ is a reinterpretation of the original from 1996. At that time, the game marked the beginning of the Lara Croft series. But it is not the beginning of their story.
The action begins after the events of the Survivor trilogy, i.e. after the franchise reboot by Crystal Dynamics. The latter showed Lara’s path to becoming an adventurer. “Legacy of Atlantis” is also dedicated to the classic video game heroine, but at a later date.
Legacy of Atlantis with Survivor past
In one Interview mit IGN Jeff Adams, Experience Director at Crystal Dynamics, spoke about the connection of the “remake”, which Crystal Dynamics itself does not call it thatto the larger “Tomb Raider” universe. When asked if it was a standalone adventure, he answered no.
Adams then explained where the game is in the narrative: “It’s important to us that Lara has a Survivor past, but in Legacy of Atlantis she’s not tied to that. So we’re showing Laura at a certain point in her career where she’s in her prime, and that’s what we’re focusing on in this adventure.”
What is the Survivor Trilogy? With the reboot „Tomb Raider“ (2013), Crystal Dynamics started a new series. The focus is on a younger, inexperienced Lara who, through extreme danger and personal loss, matures into a famous adventurer. They followed „Rise of the Tomb Raider“ (2015) and „Shadow of the Tomb Raider“ (2018).
The same universe as Survivor Series
IGN probed and wanted to know whether the new game canonically forms a separate universe or whether a narrative thread connects the old template with the younger trilogy. Adams stuck to his line and confirmed the common background:
“No. The events of Survivor Series actually happened and it’s the same universe, but we meet them at this point in their career,” Adams said.
