With the final update “Black Tides”, Ubisoft closes the chapter of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” – and finally gives Naoe and Yasuke’s adventure the longed-for, round end. The studio is thus responding directly to the players’ criticism, as game director Simon Lemay-Comtois has now admitted.
„Assassin’s Creed Shadows“ took the franchise to Japan for the first time last year, fulfilling a long-awaited dream for many fans. But while the setting was convincing, another aspect caused clear criticism in many places: the story.
The end of the main story about Naoe and Yasuke in particular sparked a lot of discussion. Many players found the conclusion to be too abrupt, while series veterans in particular missed the deep anchoring in the classic Templar Assassin lore.
But with that the final „Black Tides“-Updatewhich was released this week, Ubisoft addressed the criticism consistently – and finally gave “Shadows” the round and satisfying conclusion that the community has been waiting for.
The fact that this happened at all is solely thanks to the feedback from the players. Simon Lemay-Comtois, game director of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” explained this in a self-critical interview on the official website Ubisoft-Website.
Accordingly, the community’s wishes were followed closely: “I’m a gamer myself and I often agree with the community’s opinion. So when they say: ‘Give us more Templar stuff!’ or ‘Give us more reasons to craft gear builds!’, it’s not hard for me to agree and try to fix, add, or tweak things to address their feedback.”
“Black Tides” is therefore much more than just a technical patch. Rather, it functions as a narrative bracket that, according to Lemay-Comtois, “pushes the door wide open” to bring the conflict with the mysterious “Black Cross” into focus and finally bring the story of Naoe and Yasuke to an emotionally satisfying point.
New endgame and a bridge to Black Flag Resynced
On top of that, the final update also fulfills another wish from the community: that of more gameplay depth. Because after the new story conclusion, which lasts around two hours of playing time, five new arenas await the so-called “domains” that are intended to put players to the test.
“Black Tides” also serves as a tactical foreshadowing for the upcoming new edition „Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced“. The third and final present-day rift called “Horizon” builds a bridge between feudal Japan and the meta-narrative surrounding Captain Edward Kenway.
Meanwhile, the end of active development on “Shadows” is an extremely emotional affair for Lemay-Comtois: “It’s bittersweet. (…) I was employee number 12 when we started working on the game, so I’ve been there the whole journey. It’s a little difficult to let go of these characters and move on, but we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved.”

But even though the story of Naoe and Yasuke has come to an end with the final update, the director leaves a door open for the future – at least a small gap: “I know that these characters and the Japanese setting still have a lot of potential, and I will always strive to do more with them.”
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was originally released on March 20, 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, while a version for the Switch 2 followed on December 2, 2025. However, the new story content is not available for the Nintendo console as “Black Flag Resynced” will not be released for the Switch 2.
