PlayStation Store: The next blow against Shovelware –

Sony is tightening its quality standards in the PlayStation Store in order to consistently remove inferior software. For providers like Afil Games, this means withdrawing from the platform and shifting to other platforms.

The video game industry is subject to constant adjustments, in which the quality specifications of the platform operators play a decisive role. As regulations tighten, developers must fundamentally rethink their business strategies. These necessary changes ultimately influence which titles remain available to players on consoles.

This development has now occurred at the publisher Afil Games, whose titles are being removed from the PlayStation Store due to the stricter guidelines. Sony has significantly increased its requirements for releasing software on the platform over the course of this year.

In favor of higher quality

These measures are primarily aimed at increasing the quality of the store offering and consistently eliminating inferior content. As a result, Afil Games was forced to to publicly confirm the end of the partnership with Sony. Due to the incompatibility with the new business requirements, the developer’s already available games will disappear from the digital range in the near future.

While the quality of individual works can be debated, Afil Games’ productions often exhibit characteristics of asset flips. They also attract attention with extremely easy-to-reach platinum trophies.

The studio itself emphasizes that it wants to continue to provide new experiences for Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch. So it is simply shifting its strategy to other platforms – presumably without changing the previously low quality.

It is not an isolated case that Sony has removed numerous games from the PlayStation Store this year. The PlayStation manufacturer only announced at the beginning of the month Collaboration with Acyntha ended. Some providers are now even withdrawing voluntarily back.

Xbox also has a bunch of inferior productions in its own store:

Given the generic nature of this software, dispensing with this catalog is unlikely to be a loss for the PS5 portfolio. Many of these titles seem like simple copies of well-known game concepts that hardly reveal any artistic vision of their own. As a result of the cleanup, the store clearly gains clarity again. And even more important: the player base can concentrate on higher quality content.
