The world of “Tetris” continues to grow. Not through a new game, but through a brand new, animated TV series called “Tetris: World Builders”. Responsible for this is a team that has already proven its flair for video game adaptations with the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films.
The hype surrounding video game adaptations in screen or TV format continues: During “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” A number of records were only broken in the spring „Sonic the Hedgehog 4“ or „The Legend of Zelda“ the next adaptations are already on the way.
And as has now become known at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, an absolute veteran of gaming history is also daring to make the leap into the TV landscape – and one that you probably wouldn’t necessarily expect.
Because with „Tetris: World Builders“ The Tetris Company and the animation studio TeamTO are currently working on a series that will transform the abstract puzzle game into a real adventure.
52 episodes full of creativity
The project will consist of a total of 52 episodes, each with a crisp running time of 11 minutes and aimed at children aged six and over.
The plot is as creative as the gameplay itself: mysterious Tetrimino blocks rain down from the sky and a group of young “world builders” must use this situation to save their world, reshape landscapes and solve community problems.
The series relies on a STEAM concept (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) to teach logical thinking in a playful way.
For Maya Rogers, President and CEO of The Tetris Company, the next logical step for the franchise: “For more than 40 years, Tetris has brought people together through a universal language of logic and play. With ‘Tetris: World Builders,’ we are expanding the Tetris universe in an entirely new way, transforming one of the most iconic games of all time into a new adventure that inspires creativity, collaboration and discovery.”
Prominent reinforcement
It’s not just the concept that will make you sit up and take notice, but above all the cast behind the scenes. Because with Chuck Williams there is an executive producer on board who played a key role in the success of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” films.
He works closely with the TeamTO producers to ensure that “Tetris: World Builders” captures the essence of the classic while telling a compelling story.
However, production is currently still in an early development phase. But the goals are clear: “Tetris” should no longer be perceived as just an abstract puzzle game, but as a living, cinematic world that can be experienced through characters.
Producer Tara Sibel Demren also sees a great opportunity in the project: “We have the opportunity to introduce human children characters into the world of Tetris for the first time in order to make the universe tangible through an emotional and character-oriented lens.”
It is not yet clear when “Tetris: World Builders” will be released.
By the way, it’s not the first time that the cult classic has made the jump to the screen. The film “Tetris” was released in 2023, in which Taron Egerton took on the role of developer Henk Rogers – a film that is absolutely worth seeing for anyone who is interested in the background of the classic.
