Shortly before the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, a PS5 entry for “Gears of War: E-Day” appeared at a retailer. At the same time, a well-known insider spoke out with contrary information about the PlayStation version. Will the shooter be released for Sony’s console or not?
Less than 24 hours before Xbox Games Showcase 2026 Players discovered a placeholder entry for a PS5 version of “Gears of War: E-Day” on Walmart’s website. The find was quickly shared on social networks, among other things on Reddit. A little later, the product entry disappeared from the internet again.
The retailer quoted a price of $99.99 for the Standard Edition, which was obviously a placeholder. The page also contained three bullet points labeled “Placeholder 1”, “TBD 2” and “TBD 3”. There are many indications that Walmart published the entry by mistake. Can PS5 owners be happy? The story doesn’t end here.
Insider Jeff Grubb: PS5 version has been canceled
While the Walmart post gave some players hope that an announcement would be made soon, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb came forward with conflicting information. In the latest podcast he claimed just a few hours before the Xbox Games Showcase that Microsoft had canceled a planned PlayStation implementation.
“Gears of War E-Day was originally supposed to come out on the PS5. That has now been done. That just happened. That was a decision that was made recently,” said Grubb. Accordingly, “Gears of War: E-Day” will probably only be released for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Grubb suspected that the new Xbox leadership under Asha Sharma may have made the decision. After taking office, Sharma announced that she would reconsider Xbox’s exclusivity policy.
A few days ago, in an interview with Bloomberg, she also said that a platform “must offer exclusive content and services”. If Grubb’s assumption is correct, abandoning the PS5 version would be one of them first difficult decisions under their leadership. But would it also be a decision that would be financially profitable?

Microsoft announced „Gears of War: E-Day“ at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, but did not name any platforms at the time. A release for PC and Xbox Series X/S was expected. After Microsoft expanded its multiplatform strategy and, among other things, brought “Gears of War: Reloaded” to the PS5, many players also thought a PS5 version of the prequel was possible.
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet. However, those interested don’t have to wait long: The Xbox Games Showcase 2026 takes place today, June 7th, from 7 p.m.
Immediately afterwards there will be a direct presentation of “Gears of War: E-Day” with further details about the upcoming prequel. By then it should be clear whether the Walmart entry was a first indication of a PlayStation version or just a meaningless placeholder, perhaps for promotional purposes.
