After pointing out on Steam that AI tools were used in the development of “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis,” Crystal Dynamics has now also commented on this topic. However, the studio’s official statement caused further criticism.
After several insiders recently to a postponement von „Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis“ pointed out, Crystal Dynamics confirmed this week also officiallythat the reinterpretation of the first “Tomb Raider” from 1996 will not appear until next year.
The studio confirmed February 12, 2027 as the release date for “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis” and announced that the new edition can now be pre-ordered. A product entry on Steam then became a topic of conversation, showing that AI was used in the development.
In order to directly counter rumors and speculation, Crystal Dynamics made an official statement about how the team specifically used artificial intelligence when working on “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis”.
Crystal Dynamics statement causes criticism
Accordingly, the developers used AI tools, especially in early development. “AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration phases and temporary development content. All AI-assisted assets were either replaced or reworked by humans to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team,” Crystal Dynamics wrote.
A statement that only caused more criticism. As several players criticize, Crystal Dynamics formulated its statement so vaguely that it cannot be ruled out that complete AI content can be found in the game.
Players are particularly bothered by the reference to content that was created using AI and simply edited by humans. For a large part of the community, having AI assets “refined” by human hands is nothing more than just waste: in the end, the foundation remains AI-generated.
According to the critics, the fact that a developer has once again devoted themselves to the result does not change the fact that we are dealing with AI content. They fear that this will make real artists redundant and that this development could ultimately cost them their jobs.
