“Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withering World” not only received a fresh gameplay trailer, but also a concrete release date – and especially for PlayStation fans, the release is a real historical event.
This year the legendary celebrated „Dragon Quest“series from Square Enix is now celebrating its 40th birthday. In keeping with this, the annual “Dragon Quest” day took place at the end of May, which not only marked the unveiling of „Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams“ had ready, but with “Dragon Quest Monsters: The World” also the announcement of a brand new offshoot of the popular spin-off series.
Unfortunately, the first gameplay insights and a concrete release date were still missing at this point, but that changed this afternoon. Square Enix used the most recent Nintendo Direct to present a first trailer for the monster collecting craze and also to set the specific release date.
Dragon Quest Monsters returns to PlayStation after 24 years
The first good news: Fans don’t have to wait long until the charming role-playing game appears. The release of “Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withering World” is scheduled for December 3, 2026.
The second good news: Fortunately, Square Enix avoids September and October. After all, both months are already completely overloaded with titles, some of them top-class, but all of them „GTA 6“ want to get out of the way in November. “The Withering World,” on the other hand, seems perfect for the cozy pre-Christmas period.
In addition to the Switch, Switch 2 and the PC, the game will also be released this time for the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5. The release is almost an extraordinary event for PlayStation fans: The last time a game in the series was released for a Sony console was in 2002. Back then it was “Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2” for the first PlayStation – a compilation that never made it out of Japan.
Over 500 monsters and a new beginning without any prior knowledge
The newly released trailer for “Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withering World” provides tangible gameplay insights for the first time and thus a foretaste of what players can look forward to.
In the main role: the two protagonists Bianca and Nera, who franchise veterans of course know as marriage candidates from the absolute cult classic “Dragon Quest 5”. However, according to Square Enix, no previous knowledge is necessary: the story about saving the dying world of Immerwelk stands completely on its own.
In terms of gameplay, “The Withering World” offers the usual “Dragon Quest Monsters” fare, but boasts an enormous scope right from the start: Well over 500 monsters are just waiting to be discovered, fought and tamed.
In order to get the creatures into your own team, you have to defeat them in turn-based battles as usual and then bribe them with treats. In addition, synthesis – the heart of the series – also returns. This allows two trained monsters to be fused together to create an entirely new creature with even more powerful abilities and stats.
“Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withering World” will be released on December 3, 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. Im PS Store Pre-orders are now possible.
