With “The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival”, a brand new video game was announced that is based on the well-known TV and comic book and brings the heroes Rick, Daryl and Michonne back to the screens – but very differently than you would initially expect.
Although the legendary TV series and the original comic series have long since ended „The Walking Dead“ – true to the title – simply cannot be killed. While one spin-off after another is being shown on television, the brand is now also hitting the gaming sector again.
But if you’re expecting the next dark survival adventure or an emotional cinematic adventure in the style of Telltale’s cult games, you’re completely wrong. The newly announced „The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival“ is a real 2D side-scrolling brawler in the classic arcade style.
Arcade-style all-out war
The zombie action is packaged in a chic, modern retro pixel art look, while a first trailer provides a small foretaste of what “The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival” will deliver in the future.
However, things are even easier for PC gamers: a free demo is now available for download on Steam that invites you to try it out.
As for the game’s story, “Streets of Survival” takes place in the middle of the well-known and extremely popular all-out war storyline of the AMC series. In the midst of the walker apocalypse, you find yourself at war with the unscrupulous Saviors, who are led by none other than cult villain Negan and his right-hand man Simon.
Over the course of the campaign, you travel to iconic, linear locations from the template, including the Sanctuary, the Hilltop colony and the Alexandria refuge. According to developer Odaclick Game Studio, the level should score points with dynamic backdrops, treacherous environmental dangers and intense, story-driven moments.
Iconic heroes, legendary bosses and tough combos
As a player, you slip into the shoes of the three biggest fan favorites, each with their own unique fighting styles, status values and special abilities:
- Rick Grimes: Deals well in close combat and relies on his legendary Colt Python Magnum.
- Michonne: Agilely slashes through the hordes with her trusty katana.
- Daryl Dixon: He prefers to keep enemies at bay with his precise crossbow.
In addition to the massive zombie hordes and human troops of the Saviors, there are also tough, multi-phase boss fights to be fought. Here you not only have to stand up to Negan, but also iconic series undead like the spiked garbage dump walker Winslow or the bloated well biter from Hershel’s Farm.
The combat system promises a fast-paced mix of brutal melee combos, finishers and ranged attacks for crowd control. In addition, “Streets of Survival” should offer a high level of replay value, for example through different move sets and higher levels of difficulty. If you prefer something a little more relaxed and primarily want to enjoy the story, you can also use an optional Easy Mode.
It is still unknown when “The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival” will be released – a release date has not been given. What is certain, however, is that it will be released for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and the PC.
