The release of “Final Fantasy 7 Revelation” in spring 2027 is casting its shadow ahead, so director Naoki Hamaguchi is already looking to the future. Now he spoke about his plans after the grand finale and also responded to the fans’ loud demands for a remake of “Final Fantasy 6”.
Laid in April 2020 „Final Fantasy 7 Remake“ the foundation stone for what is probably the largest and most ambitious remake project in gaming history. And now the end is finally in sight: With „Final Fantasy 7 Revelation“ The grand finale will appear in spring 2027 and bring the epic saga of Cloud and his friends to a – hopefully – well-deserved conclusion.
But while fans are looking forward to the finale, the question inevitably arises: What does the development team around Naoki Hamaguchi actually do afterwards?
And this is exactly the question the game director asked himself in an interview and spoke surprisingly openly about his future – and the loud wish of many fans that he should focus on a new edition of „Final Fantasy 6“ take care.
Final Fantasy 6 Remake? Hamaguchi responds to fan wishes
But if you had hoped that after the release of “Revelation” Hamaguchi would immediately put the next “Final Fantasy” classic in a modern AAA guise, you have to be strong now.
When asked about a remake of “Final Fantasy 6,” he initially responded with a smile, but then made it clear that such a project might be better off in other hands.
“I see a lot of fans and the community asking me to take the helm of an FF6 remake. So I see a lot of that circulating around the net. But you know, a Final Fantasy 6 remake or any other remake – that could be me, or it could be someone else. I personally think it might be in better hands if it went to another creator within Square Enix,” Hamaguchi told the Game Informer.

Elsewhere – namely in a conversation with Bloomberg – he underlined his point of view even more drastically and delivered a clear rejection: “It won’t be a remake!”
And you can hardly blame Hamaguchi: When Revelation comes out next year, he will have devoted over a decade of his life almost exclusively to reimagining Final Fantasy 7.
The future: A new AAA JRPG is coming
Hamaguchi wants to remain absolutely true to the JRPG genre in the future. Accordingly, he is eager to put his accumulated experience into a fresh project that can captivate players around the globe.
“As for what I personally want to do, well, I obviously think my next creative work will be a JRPG as well,” Hamaguchi continued.
He sees the publisher as ideally positioned for the future: “If you look at all the other titles we’ve released at Square Enix, not just the FFVII Remake series, then I think that Square Enix as a brand, as a company, is more than capable of delivering these large-scale RPGs that can appeal to gamers all over the world.”
However, he deliberately leaves it open whether this will be a completely new IP or part of the “Final Fantasy” saga. But the appeal of the unknown is great.
“Fans may have many different expectations, but personally I want to take on this new challenge with another RPG title after this project, be it Final Fantasy or another IP,” explains the director.
“Like I said, we don’t know yet. But for me personally it would be exciting if it wasn’t Final Fantasy because that could be a challenge for me. So whatever it is, I hope the fans are looking forward to it.”
But before Hamaguchi thinks more concretely about the future, his undivided attention is still focused on the upcoming milestone: “Right at this moment, I’m fully focused on finishing FF7 Revelation and making sure that we deliver the FF7 Remake series in perfect condition – that’s where I’m at right now.”
The release of “Final Fantasy 7 Revelation” is planned for spring 2027 – simultaneously for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and the PC. An exact date is still pending.
