The God of War adaptation from Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures has to find a new leading actor. After an incident on set, the role of Kratos is about to be recast. And that is already having an impact.
Ryan Hurst should appear in the upcoming series „God of War“ it Embody war god Kratos. However, several US media reports that the actor was injured during filming and that the producers are recasting the role.
How TMZ and Deadline According to reports, Hurst tore his biceps during a stunt. The injury occurred on set in Vancouver. The tear was so severe that surgery was necessary. According to Deadline, the actor has already completed this and is recovering.
Why Kratos is being recast
Recovery after such an operation takes around four to six months. In a worst-case scenario, Hurst may need up to a year to return to full operational capability, which would keep him out of action well into 2027. After a “carefully made” decision, they ultimately decided against waiting. Sticking with Hurst would have disrupted the series’ schedule too much.
The renewed preparations are scheduled to begin in mid-August 2026, and the actual filming will then continue in mid-October 2026. It is still unclear who will take on the role of Kratos. The search for a new leading actor should go quickly.
The change comes with a significant setback. According to reports, four episodes with Hurst had already been filmed, as well as parts of other episodes. These recordings cannot simply be continued. Instead, the affected scenes have to be completely re-shot with the new actor.
For Hurst it means the end of a role in which he had invested a lot. The actor gained around 18 kilograms of muscle mass to physically match the Spartan warrior. But there is also a reason for the actor to be happy these days: At the same time, Hurst is in Christopher Nolan’s „The Odyssey“ to see, which is just starting in cinemas.
Kratos and Atreus already appeared in a picture
To date, there has only been one official image of Hurst as Kratos. The footage, released in February, showed him training with Atreus, played by Callum Vinson. At the time, Hurst responded to criticism of his appearance by pointing out that you shouldn’t believe everything you see.
The “God of War” series was already struggling with changes before the injury. In 2024, Rafe Judkins left the project as showrunner, after which Ronald D. Moore, known for “Battlestar Galactica” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” took over. The cast includes Ed Skrein as Baldur, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as ThorMax Parker as Heimdall and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka play Brok and Sindri. A start date for the adaptation has still not been set.
