The dream of a real Blu-ray for “GTA 6” in the Christmas season has shattered and patient collectors won’t have a disc in their hands in December. Rockstar Games is pushing digital hard.
The industry giant remains digital
The US Magazine The Hollywood Reporter officially quashed the rumors of a subsequent disc version in December. A source with direct knowledge of the production plans confirmed that Rockstar has no plans to release “GTA 6” on disc. Neither at the launch in November nor in the months afterwards.
Previously, an alleged leak from European dealer circles had sent the community into turmoil. Supposedly the Blu-ray version was only supposed to be released a month later in order to prevent day-one leaks due to dealer copies being sold too early. A misleading email from Rockstar Support further fueled this hope. Everything misinterpreted. By “physical version”, support only meant the already announced code-in-a-box variant.
A blow for collectors
Anyone who picks up the packaging in the store on November 19th will only find a printed piece of paper with a download code. Pure facade for the dealer shelves. Rockstar wants total control of the used market and absolute spoiler security before release day. The fans of physical media pay the price. A real setback.
The only consolation for the future remains hypothetical. If a “Complete Edition” were to appear on disc in a year or two, it would at least be directly up to date with the latest patches. That doesn’t help anyone at the moment. If you want to play GTA 6 at launch, you will have to download the massive download digitally via the servers.
Rockstar Games is single-handedly abolishing the physical age for its games. The fact that the biggest release of the decade completely foregoes a disc shows where the industry is finally heading. The box on the shelf degenerates into pure plastic decoration with no real utility value.
