The technology experts at Digital Foundry have already conducted a detailed test to determine whether the Steam Machine’s hardware is worth the hefty price tag.
Summer will also be hot for hardware fans. Valve sends the first devices Steam Machine officially entered the race on June 29th.
Valve broke the silence yesterday, Monday announced important details about the Steam Machine. With a price range of up to 1,428 euros for the top configuration, the manufacturer is targeting a wealthy audience who is looking for a compact solution for the living room. Digital Foundry has already taken a close look at the hardware and is providing an initial, well-founded assessment of the performance offered.
Tiny and whisper quiet
The experts from Digital Foundry show themselves after two weeks of testing impressed with the hardware. They describe the design as tiny, whisper-quiet and visually appealing. With its compact shape, it is reminiscent of a slightly larger Nintendo GameCube. The housing in particular impresses with its high-quality workmanship and interchangeable front panels, which enable easy personalization thanks to a magnetic attachment.
Despite the technical advantages, the starting prices between 1,039 euros and 1,428 euros are likely to deter many potential buyers. This brings with it the question of building your own or purchasing a classic PC. Valve itself already points to this Flexibility of SteamOS which also runs on other hardware and functions as a well-thought-out user interface. On the Steam Machine, the additional power also ensures smooth and almost error-free operation of the interface. Valve thus delivers a coherent, albeit expensive, overall package.
20 percent more CPU performance than the PS5…
Technically, the “Steam Machine” is based on a customized Hawk Point 2 processor, which works with six cores and has a maximum TDP of 30 watts. However, using only one memory module slows down the CPU noticeably in some situations. It still outperforms the PS5 in the test by around 20 percent.
For the GPU, Valve uses a trimmed Navi 33 chip, whose performance falls precisely between the Radeon RX 6600 and the more powerful RX 7600. Despite reduced computing units and a power consumption limited to 130 watts, the system offers a solid foundation that is suitable for demanding gaming scenarios.
…partly inferior at high resolutions
In a direct comparison with the Sony console, the Steam Machine is sometimes inferior at high resolutions because it simply lacks the enormous memory bandwidth of the consoles. Nevertheless, the system offers a comparable experience thanks to VRR support and upcoming FSR 4 featuresprovided players specifically adjust the graphics settings.
Although Valve is constantly optimizing the VRAM utilization, manual adjustment of the graphics settings is still recommended. From a technical point of view, the device does not set any new standards, but it impresses with its high-quality design. The compact housing is whisper-quiet and has excellent craftsmanship, which is what makes this hardware so attractive.

Ultimately, every buyer has to decide for themselves whether the high price is justified for the overall package on offer. Fortunately, the PC remains an open platform, so no one is necessarily dependent on this special hardware. Thanks to SteamOS and alternative operating systems, gamers continue to enjoy complete freedom in choosing their preferred gaming hardware.
