After the reveal of “God of War: Laufeny,” newcomers who had not played “God of War” before were left wondering whether previous knowledge of the story was necessary. Sony has now made a recommendation on this topic.
One of the highlights of this week’s State of Play was certainly the official unveiling of „God of War: Laufey“which includes the Santa Monica Studios a presentation lasting around 20 minutes presented in detail.
After players took on the role of Kratos in the previous “God of War” adventures, “Laufey” takes a new approach and puts Faye in the spotlight as a playable protagonist. Following the presentation at State of Play, they named Santa Monica Studios more details about the action title and went into detail about the playful implementation of “God of War: Laufeny”.
On the official website Sony also answered a question that was particularly posed by players who had little contact with the “God of War” series: Is previous knowledge of the history of the “God of War” saga necessary?
Or can “Laufey” be used by complete newcomers to the series without running the risk of missing important story aspects?
Independent adventure also suitable for newcomers
As Sony wrote, “God of War: Laufeny” is a completely new and independent adventure that can also be enjoyed by players who have not played any other “God of War” before.
In order to fully enjoy the world and its characters, the PlayStation makers recommend playing the two predecessors before “Laufey”.
Both published in 2018 „God of War“ as well as “God of War: Ragnarök” from 2022 are available for the PS5, PS4 and PC.

The detailed gameplay presentation this week showed that Faye as the protagonist is not the only innovation in “God of War: Laufeny”. In addition, the Santa Monica Studios team is again orienting itself more towards the classic “God of War” titles.
This is noticeable, among other things, in the fights, which are significantly faster and more dynamic than in the two predecessors. Over and beyond The jump button is also making a comeback.

“We wanted to build on the strengths of the modern God of War combat system, but at the same time we wanted to incorporate a little bit of that classic old-school God of War DNA,” said design director Denny Yeh, summarizing the team’s goals.
Sony has not yet revealed when “God of War: Laufeny” will be released. However, according to unconfirmed reports, there are some indications pointing to a release in 2027.
